He's had to tape together wrapping paper just to get it covered. Instead he picks up a little box with a ribbon that's hanging on the tree. It's about the right size to be a jewelry box, in fact, which is exactly what it is. The jewelry box is velvet, a little old, and the ring inside is much older.
